Architecture of Ogden City, Utah

The creation of the book.

Junction City, Ogden. A journey of Ogden’s architecture. An 11 x 8.5 inch hardbound coffee table book. Over 150 pages of full color photographs and information of existing architecture in Ogden, Utah. All nicely bound in a hard cover, jacketed book. Like Rain Photography and Like Rain Publishing present this book with stunning photos from local artists and photographers.  Let’s make Ogden known for what it should be.

 The process

We are looking at the unique architecture in Ogden to include; Victorian, Art Deco, Mid-century modern, tutors, craftsman, and all of the in-betweens. Our goal is to showcase the gambit of wonderful homes and architecture that Ogden has to offer today.

We have collected and edited over 40 photos to date, with plans to capture at least 100 more. The process takes time, and we want to do it correctly. That is why we are Waiting for things like spectacular sunsets, perfect clouds, flowers, trees, leaves and even snow. We could just make a quick run through the city photographing each home as it is but, that would do such a disservice to the homes, the book, and our customers.  Our goal is to make each one as complimentary to the home as possible.  Once we have a photo it is off to the editing room to help bring out the colors, shapes and textures to showcase these beautiful homes in an artistic edit of them and their environment.   The photo then heads to the research and history department where the information that can be found about the home to the photo is attached. Things like the original owner, the architect, and the location of the building. We also like to find a few memorable notes about the home or building, if it has significant history or information.  Once, we have all the information it is on to the layout department.   So far, we have 26 pages of our planned 150-page photo-book, laid out and complete. See our sampler below.

The contest and other artists

Along the way we are hoping to support other artists and photographers with the opportunity to be published and showcase their own work in the book .  In a few weeks (Early April 2019) we will be launching our call to artists campaign, asking for submissions to the book  These pages will showcase work from other artists and photographers. It will also compensate them for their time and talent with prize money, and the title of a published photographer or artist in the Junction City Coffee table book. Sampler

Ogden is home to a wonderful mix of unique, eclectic, and historical architecture. The purpose of this book is to highlight current architecture as it stands today, and to preserve it for many memories to come.

The Orpheum demolished in 1983 to make a parking lot.

The Orpheum demolished in 1983 to make a parking lot.

The Orpheum, which is featured on the cover of this book met the ravages of a wrecking ball in 1983, only to make room for a historic parking lot. The grand theatre is just one of the many buildings lost to time, ignorance, and neglect in Ogden.

Unlike the Orpheum the rest of the buildings featured in this book still stand today. Thanks to a growing community of people in Ogden that are finally saying goodbye to the damage of multifamily apartments, neglect, and crime that has plagued many of these buildings for years. This is book is to celebrate Junction City, Ogden with artistically produced photographs of the architecture.
